Porcelain crowns are a popular type of restorative dentistry device. They are used to cover a single tooth when the patient is experiencing a dental problem that is compromising it’s use and/or appearance. Each crown is hollow, but custom designed so that it is a similar shape and size to the teeth surrounding it and will fit over the affected tooth perfectly.
As their name suggests, they are created from porcelain, which affords patients several cosmetic benefits. Porcelain can be glazed in varying colors, enabling us to find one which closely resembles your natural teeth so that your restoration is as discreet and esthetically-pleasing as possible.
Who would benefit from a porcelain crown?
Porcelain crowns are typically recommended for patients who have:
a cavity that is so large it isn’t possible to treat it with a regular filling.
a tooth that is broken and needs to be held together.
a weakened tooth that is at risk of breaking.
a tooth that is badly eroded, misshapen or discolored and the patient is seeking to improve its appearance.
been recommended to have a dental bridge (since crowns are used to attach the bridge to the natural teeth).
been recommended to have a dental implant (since a crown is used to create the visible part of the implant solution).
How are porcelain crowns fitted?
Before your porcelain crown is fitted, the underlying tooth will first need to be prepared. For this reason, the process to receive a porcelain crown usually takes two appointments.
During the first appointment, our dentist will remove any infected or decayed material from the tooth and ensure it is an appropriate size to support your new crown. This may mean filing a little of the natural tooth down or building it up so that it is large enough to secure the crown to. Your dentist will then take impressions of the underlying tooth and surrounding teeth and these will be sent to our dental laboratory so that your porcelain crown can be created. In the meantime, you will be fitted with a generic temporary crown.
Around a week later you will be able to return to our offices where you will be able to see the finished, custom-designed crown. Your dentist will remove the temporary version and check that the new one fits as it should. Once satisfied that it will fit comfortably, your new, final crown will be secured permanently in place.
The entire dental crown process is carried out using local anesthetic so you will not feel any pain throughout the procedure. If you are a particularly nervous patient, it may be possible for you to also be mildly sedated – enquire with our dental team when booking your appointment.
Why choose porcelain crowns for your dental restoration?
There are a variety of benefits to choosing a porcelain crown as your dental restoration.
Your new crown will protect the underlying tooth from further damage that could cause you pain or other debilitating symptoms.
Crowns are functional, enabling you to enjoy biting, chewing, speaking and more without compromise.
Since they are custom-designed to fit specifically to your teeth and smile, crowns are comfortable.
You can restore the appearance of your affected tooth so that it is attractive and yet still looks very natural and discreet.
Porcelain crowns can be color-matched to your existing teeth, adding to the discretion of this solution and meaning that the appearance of your smile isn’t compromised by your restoration.
